I keep thinking that I wish author Mingo Kane had not added the subtitle to his novel and mentioned the word `romance'. I know it gave me the wrong first impression and I'm just hoping it won't be responsible for making other readers pass it by. The `romance' mentioned here did not strike me as the romantic fiction type of romance even though there is some of that in the story, but was more along the lines of this definition I found in my Oxford American Dictionary: romance, noun, 1. an atmosphere or tendency characterized by a sense of remoteness from or idealization of everyday life.In dealing with the effects of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder in the life of Marine Lance Corporal Tom Judah this author has perfectly captured that sense of remoteness from everyday life suffered by anyone with this debilitating disorder. It seems to me that Tom Judah must have been living through the worst possible combination of symptoms. This was a very difficult and fatiguing novel to read because it constantly focuses on aspects of war and military service which we civilians have never and will never experience. I'm sure that military or ex-military personnel who are fighting to overcome this medical diagnosis will react in a positive way because Kane is articulating their own symptoms of PTSD. Perhaps even giving descriptions to feelings they have, but can't explain. For those reasons alone this would be a worthwhile novel. However, there is a story here which involves a deeply scarred individual just trying the best way he can to make it to someplace safe. Safe from the nightmares and the flashbacks which haunt his sleep and now, often, his waking hours as well. Tom meets a woman on his bus trip from Los Angeles to Virginia and there is hope that some degree of normalcy may be found for him.
I've said that the novel was difficult for me to read and that is because the first portions of the book are completely filled with combat flashbacks and explanations of the wide variety of symptoms someone suffering from PTSD might exhibit. If you are like me and don't know anyone who personally has this disorder, please persevere and keep reading through this learning time. It will all serve you well for when the novel begins to take a turn toward having Tom Judah interact with other characters. The author did have a tendency to over-write passages when it seemed to me that more direct, common wordage might have been more in character with the overall tone of the book.
Make no mistake, this novel is about the consequences of war on the mental health of one man who seems to have lost his humanity in order to remain alive. Veterans who have been there will see themselves and the consequences in their own lives quite clearly. I congratulate Mingo Kane for being willing to write this novel with the power to send the reader reeling and to educate those of us who honestly did not understand.

Tom Judah has recently come home from his third tour of duty in Iraq. A Marine through and through. His doctors are worried about his mental health. While making his way from Vegas, he meets Jessica. Jessica is from a town not far from his own in Virginia. They decided to make the trip home together. Unfortunately, Tom can't stop the flashbacks.
This book was so beautifully written. The way the author worded this entire book was deep and beautiful and just took you away to another place. You were in Iraq with Tom. You were on the road with Tom and Jessica. You were sitting in a cabin in Virginia. At times I cried for what Tom went through in Iraq. His flashbacks are frequent and unnerving, knowing the men and women in this war are going through and feeling the same horrible things. This is definitely a book worth reading. It will make you feel and think. It also has a wonderful surprise ending that I didn't see coming until the very end.
Since I have a son currently serving in Afghanistan, this book was very difficult to read for me--on an emotional level.I felt I needed to read it, but didn't really want to know. In the end, I knew that I SHOULD read it and am glad I did. I was very moved by this novel on so many levels that I am having difficulty finding the right words to explain the depth of emotion this book evoked. The writing was so well done that I felt Tom's emotions. I could envision myself on the battle field with him, falling in love with Jessica, and all of the experiences that followed. I have already recommended it to a volunteer at the local VA Hospital as it could have so much value assisting families in understanding what their war veteran might be going through with PTS. This book is written with such passion that it could only be from personal experience. Thank you, Mr. Kane,for your service and for sharing it with us in such a compelling manner. It is sure to help families and friends cope with returning soldiers struggles to assimilate back to civilian life.
Wow! This story read like an autobiography of a decorated Marine being sent home after 3 tours in Iraq. I don't like reading graphic derogatory swear words and there was plenty in the beginning and throughout the book, but it needed to be written that way in order for the characters to be so real. I had to go back to the beginning of the book to see if this was non-fiction! Tom Judah suffers heavily from PTSD and this is his story and his struggle as he tries to find his way back to the human race. Along the way he meets up with Jessica Spire who has her own demons in her life. Together they try to make things work. I can't say any more because I don't want to give away any spoilers. If you can get past the raw language and see the whole story, this book is definitely worth the read. I'm glad I decided to continue reading it....
Mingo Kane's Scars of the Prophet is the finest story of a warrior's battle with PTSD that I have read. Although the story of Tom Judah is fiction, Kane's handling of the psychological wounds suffered by many of our soldiers smacks of personal experience. The author's ability to create a cohesive storyline is commendable for a neophyte, but his writing style and plot development suggests a master in the making. I finished the story in less than a day, not because I had the free time, but because I couldn't wait to see what was going to happen next. Mingo Kane is a writer who should be encouraged to continue his trade, and Scars of the Prophet is a book that every warrior should read. There is a little bit of Tom Judah in each of us who has seen the elephant.
